Detroit opens the season with a win. Written by Devon Kemmer - November 30th, -0001

Dan Cleary

Going into season five, expectations for the Wings weren't the greatest.

Many pundents predicting a eight to ten finish in the tough Western conference.

If the first game is indictive of what we're going to see this season then they could very well prove the doubters wrong. All four lines contributed, and whats even more impressive is the fact that the fourth line comprised of Georges Laraque,Krys Beech, and Cody Mcleod chipped in 2 goals and 3 assists total. What makes this even more impressive is the fact that they only played seven minutes each.

Laraque opened the scoring on a sloppy change for the Hawks,Cleary pounced upon a loose puck, feed it to laraque who tipped it into the open cage behind Dipietro slightly after the eight minute mark of the opening peroid. Then Cody Mcleod making his cmhl debut got his chance as poor defensive play for the Hawks spelled disaster as Beech held the zone, passed to Mcleod and he ripped a shot over the right shoulder of Dipietro. The Hawks quickly replied after coach Joel Quenneville ripped the defensive play.Marek Malik stepped up and wired a shot from the point after being fed the puck by Cory Stillman,Brad Richards picked up the other assist.

Danny Cleary and Marek Zidlicky also scored for the Wings,Zidlicky picking up the game winner.

Joni Pitkanen and Brad Richards answered back for the Hawks but fell short.

Game notes:

Ilya Bryzgalov picked up the win, stoping 24 of 27 shots he face, while Rick Dipietro was handed the loss stopping 24 of 28 shots.

Dan Cleary,Brad Richards, and Cory Stillman were the 3 stars.

Alex Ovechkin was held off the scoresheet and was minus one.His frustration was evident as he took a crosschecking call early in the third peroid. He finished the night with four shots.

Mike Green picked up a assist in his first game on the top defensive pairing.

A capcity crowd of 20,066 people were recorded at "The Joe"
