Lightning Strikes in Florida Today! Written by Laci Bloomers - January 22nd, 2009

Tired of his team's underperforming inconsistency, Lightning GM did a little early spring cleaning today as he shook the very foundation of his club.

Three major trades see the face of the team change in what looks to be for the better on paper.

Brodeur joins Lightning!

The day started with a deal involving the Dallas Stars that saw veteran Ray Whitney shipped out, and ended with another deal with Dallas that saw Martin Brodeur headed to town.

The first deal with the Stars saw Whitney, who joined the club after the season started, shipped off to the Big D in exchange for Brad Larsen and a pair of blueliners, Shoane Morrisonn and Shawn Belle.  Larsen has put up very good numbers with the Stars this season, to the tune of 15 goals and 28 points.

The pair of D-men were then flipped to San Jose along with talented forwards Paul Gaustad and Brad Marchand.  In return the Lightning receive ace defenceman Rob Blake, who has put up 17 points this season and will join a blue line that already boasts the likes of Roman Hamrlik and Mike Commodore.  The Lightning also receive a pair of picks, including a decent 2009 2nd round pick belonging to Colorado, who currently sit last in the CMHL.

Finally, to end the day, the Lightning shipped off starting goaltender Tim Thomas to the Stars.  Headed to Dallas with Thomas, who has been stellar this season for a club that has not played well in front of him, is forward Scott Walker and D-man Matt Walker.

Coming to the Lightning is All World goaltender Martin Brodeur, forward Adam Hall, D-man Greg Zanon, prospect Pierre-Luc Lessard and a pair of 2011 picks.

At the end of the day, the shake-up looks like this:

IN - Martin Brodeur
OUT - Tim Thomas

IN - Rob Blake
IN - Greg Zanon
IN - Pierre-Luc Lessard (still in Junior)
OUT - Matt Walker

IN - Brad Larsen
IN - Adam Hall
OUT - Scott Walker
OUT - Paul Gaustad (from Macon)
OUT - Brad Marchand (from Macon)

IN - 2009 Colorado 2nd
IN - 2010 Los Angeles 4th
IN - 2011 Dallas 3rd
IN - 2011 Dallas 4th

Rob Blake is happy to be coming to Florida.

All trades are pending Head Office approval.  It is not know whether the process will be finalized prior to tomorrow's games against the Penguins.

Not a bag read Laci, except that the picks in the San Jose trade are wrong.  They are actually the 2009 Oilers 2nd and the 2009 Sabres 3rd.
