49 down,33 to go Written by hgimn - February 14th, 2009

The title says it all. This season, which started off disasterious, slowly turned into a season in which the team had hope, but injuries to key players such as Stephane Robidas and goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, who sat out a week with the flu derailed the team, and has led them into the league's basement.

The fans in Detroit are counting down the games in the season, hoping for a high draft pick to take away some of the sting of the misreable season. The team currently sits 14th in the league for goals for,but sits 3rd in goals allowed. Before winning two in a row, then dropping two straight, the lowly wings scored just one point of a possible twenty. That poor play resulted in any chance of being in the playoffs go up in smoke,or so it would seem. After 49 games this season, the wings are only 3 points out of the final spot in the Western Conference.Production has trailed off in the last few games,as the top line of Andy Mcdonald,Johan Franzen, and Jason Williams has gone cold, and it is rumoured that they could be demoted. Not even the return of Stephane Robidas has helped this team.GM Kemmer is left with a tough decision,in whether or not to part out the team, and gain young players and draft picks and hope to rebuild,or to keep the core of the team together and hope that the draft goes well.He could also wait around until free agency opens, and hope to land a big name player. With less than 26 million dollars commited to 35 players for next season,it figures to be a busy offseason for the Detroit management. The only players of interest that have to be re-signed are goalie Ilya Bryzgalov,Forwards Slava Kozlov, and Dick Axelsson, and defensemen Logan Pyett, and Raymond Macias. With all but Bryzgalov expected to sign for cheap,it it estimated that the wings will have somewhere between 10 to 12 million dollars in cap room come next season.

Rink Ramblings:

Newly aquired forward Villie Leino has found a home on the third line with Pascal Dupuis and Kris Beech.

Super pest Darcy Tucker was traded to the Colorado Avalanche for a 2nd round pick.

Coach Mike Babcock has suggested that the removal of the captaincy and alternates may help to provoke the team to play better. He also does not have to deal with job sercurity,as Gm Kemmer has made it quite clear that he is in no danger of being removed.

The next game for goalie Ilya Bryzgalov will be his 100 career game.

Detroit has the week off,as their next game is Saturday, against Boston.

Saskatoon will be without an ICHF team next year.Detroit annouced that they will be moving their farm team closer to home, and will play out of the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids,Michigan. They will be known as the Griffens.
