Leafs get Sundin, McCabe; Devils counter Written by StajanFan - February 28th, 2009

Today the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired two huge pieces of the puzzle that is the Eastern Conference playoff race.

The Leafs shipped out veteran Glen Murray, forward Jussi Jokinen, and defenseman Tim Gleason in exchange for superstar Mats Sundin and offensive defenseman Bryan McCabe. Also involved in the deal were picks and prospects going both ways.

Looking at the deal from the outside would show the Leafs made a major deal to help get them into the playoffs. But just minutes later, GM Marty of the New Jersey Devils countered the trade by acquiring star forward Brendan Morrison and hard hitting defenseman Garnett Exelby in exchange for Dean McAmmond, Michael Roszival, Ted Ruth, and a 2010 1st round pick.

GM Marty commentd on the deal soon after, "(We) had to do this, especially now that your Leafs will rejoin the clusterf*** that is the Eastern playoff race."

GM Zwack was not the least bit surprised that the Devils were swift to make a bigtime deal. "So you're the one that Morrison away from me. Damn, I had him and Sundin coming together in a package to Toronto. When Spicy said Morrison was most likely going somewhere else, I immediately thought of New Jersey and Tampa Bay."

Currently Toronto sits in 11th place, 5 points out of a playoff spot in the East. New Jersey sits in 6th, but only a mere 2 points up on 9th place Washington and 3 up on the 10th place Islanders.

To make things even more interesting, every team in the East from 6th to 13th place will have a day off Monday, and there is only 6 points seperating 6th place from 13th. Then on Tuesday, Boston and New Jersey are the only two teams that play from this pack.

It should be very interesting with these days off for most team in the playoff race to see if any try and counter the two deals ade today by New Jersey and Toronto. If nothing is done, these two teams might have made deals that could solidify a playoff position.
