Color Season Successful Written by Laci Bloomers - April 29th, 2009

A playoff spot clinched, a new record for points in a season, several individual records within reach, a couple of others already set, and some financial help on the way.  Add that to a 5th consecutive season of improvement in the standings, with a team that has never had a losing record, and one might consider this an already successful season.

To what accomplishments are we talking about, you ask?

- A fifth place finish already sewn up, this years edition of the Lightning are battling to the wire for home ice in the opening round;

- A team record of 90 points already accomplished, one more victory would set a new benchmark for that as well;

- An impressive 5th year in succession that the club has improved their record, having never had a losing season in the CMHL;

- Goaltender Martin Brodeur having already established individual records for wins and shutouts by a goaltender, Bobby Holik is within reach of the assists record while Ed Jovanovski flirts with the mark for points by a defenseman;

- All except one of the sponsorship goals set by the GM at the beginning of the year will add to the financial stability of the team, as they are guaranteed to pocket $2 million in TV bonuses (Versus) for attendance, $1 million for the Hype Energy sponsorship for finaishing with a winning record, $4 million in Frito-Lays money for having no strikes throughout the season (1 of 13 teams to accomplish that so far), and 1$ million guaranteed bonus for making the playoffs this season, with more available if the team advances.  Only the Speed Stick sponsorship for most penalized team fell short for the club.

That all said, this core of veterans has another goal in mind.  They believe this club can advance past the Montreal Canadiens in the opening round and get beyond the Semi-Finals, which is where the past two seasons have ended for the Lightning.

"We think we can do some damage in the East" noted Holik.  "We are playing with a lot of confidence right now, and our record over the past two months has been among the best in the league.  We plan to carry that through into the playoffs."

The fans will have no issue extending their support through May.  With the core of veterans on this club, and the chemistry they have, it is a possibility for the first time in team history.
