Ducks Capture Gold at Classic Written by Dave - September 28th, 2009

2009 2nd Annual Invitational Classic GOLD!

2009 2nd Annual Invitational Classic Silver

2009 2nd Annual Invitational Classic Bronze

The Anaheim Ducks used a shootout goal by Shawn Horcoff to fly their way to Gold in the 2009 2nd Annual CMHL Invitational Classic tournament this evening.  Horcoff was the only player in the shootout round to score, stoning Carolina Hurricanes' netminder Craig Anderson to salt away a 5-4 victory.

The game could not have been much closer as the teams battled to the wire.

The Hurricanes, who outshot the Ducks 31-30 in the contest, came out of the gate flying.  Goals by Shane Doan, Mats Sundin and Scott Nichol paced the 'Canes to a 3-2 lead after a wild opening period.  Brian Campbell tied the game at 1 for the Ducks, before Ryan Getzlaf's goal with 75 seconds remaining in the period closed the Ducks back to within a goal.

TJ Oshie and Marian Hossa scored power play goals in the opening 3:05 of the second period to vault the Ducks into the lead at 4-3, before Sundin tied the game half way through the period.

Both teams brought in their back-up goaltenders, and Anderson and Yan  Danis stood tall as the game played out.

Sundin finished with a pair of goals and an assist for the 'Canes, shattering last year's scoring mark with an incredible 19 points in 10 games.

Ryan Johnson scored a pair of goals for the Montreal Canadiens as they edged Columbus 3-2 in the Bronze Medal game.  Dominic Moore also scored for Montreal.  Vinnie Lecavalier and Chris Stewart replied for the Jackets, who lose in the Bronze Medal game for the second consecutive year.

The Jackets were the only team from the inagural Final 4 to repeat, only to miss the medal again this year.

The tournament is a great lead-up to the preseason before the 2009-2010 CMHL season commences.
