Renney out: MacTavish is the new man in town! Written by Jay - January 21st, 2010

Since new GM Jay took over, we’ve already seen some changes. The acquisition of Marek Svatos, Kevin Bieksa and Darcy Hordichuk are only a few changes that were made to the team. Today, Jay decided the make another change but this time, it is the coaching staff that gets the hook.

The Nashville Predators have announced that they decided to fire their head coach Tom Renney. To replace him behind the bench, the Predators are proud to announce the hiring of Craig MacTavish as their new head coach.

The Predators are not even playing for .500 this year and might miss the playoffs for the 3rd year in a row. On top of that, the Preds were only able to win 3 of their last 10 games which isn’t the change new GM Jay has promised. Nashville ranks 28th in the goals per game column which is a big concern for Jay. “You can’t win games if you can’t even score more than 2 goals per game. We lost most of our games by only one goal. We need to find a way to get the offense going again”. On the up side, the Preds rank 5th in the goals against department in front of high-ranked teams like Buffalo and Washington.

Jay immediately started to shop for offensive talent when he first took office. However, the newly acquired players are yet to make a difference on offense. Kevin Bieksa (acquired from San Jose for Willie Mitchell) has only been able to get 2 assists in 6 games. Marek Svatos (acquired from Toronto along with a few prospects for Nashville’s 1st round pick in the upcoming draft), was able to do slightly better with 4 pts in 6 games. “These guys are still getting used to the new system so we have to give them a chance to adapt. With a new coach in place, everybody will have to adapt which might help those new players to start on a fresh base”.

When asked if he thought making the playoffs was still realistic, GM Jay answered sarcastically:”Not sure if I really want to make the playoffs when we rank 28th for the goals per game. Going against a team like Phoenix for example could be a little embarrassing for everybody”. Is he ready to press the panic button??? “Let’s give Craig a chance to put that team back on track and based on the results we get during the upcoming games, we’ll make decision if we want to be a buyer or a seller at the trade deadline.”
