Colorado busy on deadline day Written by Seymour Buttz - March 22nd, 2010

Deadline day 2010 has come and gone, and it was a wild day around the CMHL with a ton of deals being finalized prior to the 5PM Pacific deadline. Two of the biggest deals of the day were right here in the Mile High City.

On a day where Avalanche Gm Sentinel20 stated he didnt feel he would be that active in the trade market having made a series of deals leading up tot he day, by the time the dust settled Colorado had been big players on the day, with two big unexpected trades, both with the division rival Edmonton Oilers.

In a trade that took the city by surprise, Colorado shipped goaltendr Dan Ellis as well as prospects David Labrecque and Jori Lehtera to Edmonton for a pair of goaltenders, former all star goalie J.S. Giguere and young buck Devan Dubnyk. The Avs also receive a 5th rounder in 2011. This was another complicated deal, as Edmonto will also receive either the Atl 1st in 2011 (conditional on how far the playoff run goes) or prospect Greg Niemisz.

"We felt this deal was a cant miss for us. Danny (Ellis) played great this year and was a big reason why we are where we are and we wish him all the best of luck with the Oilers, but to be a big time team you need big time goaltending, and Giguere has gone all the way and knows what it takes to win. Add to that the fact we get a goalie for the future in Dubnyk and this was a tough one to pass up" commented Sentinel20.

In order to make room for the added salary that comes with Giguere and Dubnyk, the team had to cut somewhere, and when it came time for that, once again the Oilers camer calling. 'we had discussions with a number of clubs regarding Wolski, as he was the most marketable guy to move after this deal went down, he wasnt going to move unless we got a 1st rounder for him, i was adamant on that, and Edmonton stepped up and offered what we needed." The Avalanche will receive the Calgary 1st in 2010 and Colorados own 7th rounder for this year, which had been sent toi Edmonton at the beginning of the season.

The other two moves the Avs made wer not significant, but add depth and future to the club. They dealt AHM 7th this year to TB for the toughness of Josh Gratton, something they lacked after dealing Stortini to Detroit. Then they made a peculiar move acquiring prospect goalie Alexander Pechurski and Buf 5th from Pittsburgh for prospect linden Vey, a guy Sentinel20 had high hopes for when he move dup to draft him this past summer.

The Avs are expecting to call a press conference for later on this afternoon to introduce Giguere to the city, and it has been a whirlwind 24 hours for him, and he is not expected to play tonight against Anaheim, Curtis Sanford will get the call so Giguer will have a game to watch and get into the groove with his new team.
