Morris Gets His Wish Written by Habs4Life - October 26th, 2010

Two division rivals came to a deal when the Gm of the LA Kings and the Phoenix Coyotes made a swap of talented defensemen.

Below pictured are newly acquired Niklas Kronwall and prospect Beau Bennett from LA.

Phoenix, Arizona

Derek Morris was suppose to be the teams new veteran quarterback and to be counted on to log major minutes. However after being acquired by Phoenix in the off-season around the draft time he just was not able to show any signs under new head coach Todd Richards.

After 5 games Morris who averaged around 23 minutes of ice time with 1 poor point and a -1 while spending most of it in the penalty box racking up 30 minutes. This pushed Richards to move Morris to the 3rd line pairing and that is when Morris asked GM Larouche to move him.

"I truly wish Derek and his family the best, however we just could not continue to have one of our better assets on defense sitting in the pine. So when we were able to make a move to acquire a more mobile player along with some other assets we could not pass it up" Larouche stated after the move.

The Phoenix Coyotes moved Derek Morris to a division rival club who beat them in 7 in the playoffs. The Los Angeles Kings came calling and the Phoenix Coyotes acquired Nklas Kronwall who in 6 games as 1 goal & 5 points this pre-season. Now Kronwall & Morris are different players but the biggest factor in the deal was acquiring prospect Beau Bennett who should give the team more depth at the wing position in a few years.

Coyotes GM, is still pretty busy trying to acquire a top center and adding another top defenseman. Rumors circling the team have Rene Bourque, Brandon Yip, Jason Spezza, Brent Burns, Jeff Schultz, Boris Valabik, Tim Gleason, Jack Hillen and young Kyle Turris along with the name of Mike Fisher. Larouche would not comment on the names but did make it clear the moves were not done.

The team seen a huge overall in the summer after the club were bounced in the first round of the playoffs in season 7 by the Kings and after the club saw the team lose 12 games during the regular season. A far cry from the team who in season 6 made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history and bounced the mighty Canucks in the first round to lose to the Ducks in round 2.
