Yet another superstar heads to Minny. Written by Matsson - November 13th, 2010

The Minnesota Wild fans have always been loyal, through the good times and the bad. It seems that this season that loyalty has paid off as yet another big name player heads to Minny.

St. Paul, Minnesota

The Minnesota Wild fans have always been loyal, through the good times and the bad. It seems that this season that loyalty has paid off as yet another big name player heads to Minny.

That player is none other then three time 40+ goal scorer Ilya Kovalchuk.

Entering his seventh CMHL season after the NHL could not survive the econimic downturn (even after a multi-trillion dollar bailout), Ilya has perhaps seen his best production years while a member of the CMHL Stars, Panthers, and Islanders. With only five games into season 7, and the dissapointing season 6,  the Flames had enough.

Luke, the GM of the Flames had this to say about perhaps one of the best players in the CMHL. "We just can not find Chemisty at all here..."

When Wild GM Matsson heard the phone ring "My jaw dropped."he said. "Why would anyone give up on that type of player... He's only 27?!?!" Matsson added.

"You build a team around a franchise guy like that, not ship him out after one bad season".

A bad season it was. In season 6 Ilya managed only 27 goals and only 66 pts. Far below his five seasons prior to being a member of the Flames. An average of 39.4 goals a season were scored and he had an average total of 95.8 pts.

Even with Ilya's quote unquote "bad" year, he still managed 16 pts more then the top point getter on the Wild that same season. For all of you history buffs out there the player was also a defenceman. Ed Jovanovski scored 10 goals that year and had 50 points. The top forward had a partial season with the Wild and only managed 16 goals and had only 39 points. That player was Matt Stajan.

"We were quite content to play the season out with our roster, but to be able to add a player like "Kovy" to our team at the cost of Pouliot... Then that is a deal we needed to make"

The deal works out as follows...

To CAL:
Pouliot
Ranger
Crabb
CAR 3rd

To MIN:
Kovalchuk
Tyutin
EDM 2nd

Pouliot is younger then Kovalchuk, but the Wild felt that he could never put up the same type of numbers that Ilya could. With Ranger being a solid shutdown guy, and also able to put up points it was a bit of a streach to say that Tyutin would be able to step in and deliver the same results. "We plan to use him as much as possible, and in every situation" said Matsson.

A little bonus of the deal came in the for of a 2nd rounder in this draft. With only CAR 3rd to work with little would be expected. The 2nd instantly upgrades our pick for next year. Crabb who was recently aquired for Pandolfo, was shipped out to help balance some cap.

I feel that the Minnesota Wild now have something that they have not had in many seasons... That is depth. Two solid forward lines that seem to work well with each other, and can also be paired with one another to get the job done.

Finally, the faithful have something to really cheer for. That is a talented team.
