Wing's New Year's Review Written by hgimn - January 3rd, 2011

The Wings enter the new year on a tare.In their last 10 games, they've won 7 times.and in their last 12,they've won 9.This run has pushed the team into the 7th spot in the Western Conference, although they have played more games than trailing Colorado,Chicago, and Nashville.

Spurring this change in direction is acquisitions of Ethan Moreau,Dominic Moore and Evgeny Artyukhin.Adam Mair was also called up to center the 4th line, while Matt Cullen, and Patrick Eaves were demoted.Stephane Yelle was put on the scratch list. The Wings may be winning games, but their Penalty Kill sits 28th in the league, with their Power Play not faring that much better at 20th.In order to make a playoff push, those two areas need to get stronger.

New Faces,New Places:

Bill Guerin was originally brought in as a free agent to help the 3rd line asked for a trade to a contender.Bill has said that this will be his last season, and wants to try to go out on top.Gm Kemmer marketed him around the league, and Buffalo had the best offer in Ethan Moreau.Billy G was then dealt to Buffalo in order to please him.Moreau has fit in well with Dominic Moore and Tim Kennedy on the 3rd line.

Chris Osgood is a goalie that Kemmer has targeted for 5 or 6 years when he was with Atlanta.A deal was never made, but that didn't stop Kemmer from targeting him. When Minnesota bought Ozzie out earlier this year,Kemmer jumped at the chance to acquire him He offered Ozzie a 2 year deal worth 1.525 mil per season, and he signed it.The Wings then dealt Dwayne Roloson(after a brief stint with the Griffins) to Montreal for Cedrick Desjardins.Cedrick was quickly assigned to Grand Rapids to back-up Al Montoya.

Matt Lashoff was brought in for depth on a depleted Griffins lineup.Although he hasn't played alot,he has played well in limited action. He also brings experience to a younger team that needs it.With this move, both Lashoff brothers(the other being Brian) are united on one team.

Dominic Moore was made available by the Carolina Hurricanes and Kemmer quickly snapped him up.Coming with him was grinder Evgeny Artyukhin. In return a 7th and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond were sent to Carolina. The Wings are extremely happy with the move, and are seeing the benefits of a experienced two-way forward in Moore.

Griffins Review:

The Griffin's sit atop the Ichf standings with a 23-7-2 record. The team strengthened by the additions of Cedrick Desjardins,Matt Cullen,Matt Lashoff, and Patrick Eaves look to be favourites this season. The team has faired well after the loss of Cory Murphy(Norris,Hart,Rocket Richard, and Art Ross winner last year) to the Swiss league. The team also Lost Drew Miller for 22 games due to a back injury, and Brett Lebda for 5 due to Personal Reasons.Considering how many cores players were lost or injured,it's surprising how well the team is doing.

The Griff's have brought in many new players this season. Aaron Gagnon,Matt Hallischuk,Michal Repik,Brendan Smith were all signed to deals this off-season.While Sebastion Piche,Brian Lashoff,Matt Lashoff, and Nick Petricki were dealt for.Even with the infusion of new players, the Griffin's are still on top.

Gagnon centers the 2nd line with Repik riding his wing.Halischuk plays on the 3rd line with Frankie Pare, and Ville Leino.Petricki and Brian Lashoff make up the 3rd defense pair.Piche,Smith, and MattLashoff rotate in.

Prospect Report:

Two of the Wings prospects made teams for the World Junior Hockey Championship held in Buffalo,New York this year. Maxim Kitsyn made team Russia(as he did last season),as did Charlie Coyle of team Usa.Goaltender Jonathan Iilahti was cut from Finland's roster,as was Riley Sheahan from Canada's Kitsyn is also in the final stages of joining the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors of the Ohl. Kitsyn who is under contract with Novokuznetsk Metallurg of the Russian Khl is seeking to further his play by joining a Major Junior team. The Major's are also playing host to the Memorial Cup this season, and thus have a automatic bye into the final 4.

Dylan Mcilrath(Wings first choice at 15th overall) is having a solid season with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Whl.He has 3 goals, and 10 assists in 32 games and is on pace to better last years 24 point total.Look for Dylan to be a more longterm project and make a impact 4-5 years from now.He is projected to be a bruising Shutdown defenseman with some offensive capability.

Teammates Teigan Zahn,Josh Nicholls, and Stefan Elliott are having good seasons.Zahn is the Captain of the Blades and has 11 points in 39 games. He plays top 4 minutes and is a premiere shutdown defensemen in the Whl.Nicholls is leading the team with goals(19),assists(28),points(47),Elliott is looking to build apon last years great season. He has 16 goals, and 22 assists and is one of the leagues top scoring defensemen.Elliott is also mentoring Duncan Siemens(projected first round draft pick this season) who is expected to be in the same mold as Stefan.
