East Romps in All-Star Game Written by CMHL Commissioner - February 9th, 2012
Game MVP Alex Edler arrives with his girfriend at RBC Center

The Eastern Conference All-Stars blitzed their Western Conference counterparts for 4 first period goals as they cruised to a 6-3 win the the 8th annual CMHL All-Star game in Raleigh, North Carolina today.

Blueliner Alex Edler of the Buffalo Sabres scored a pair of goals in the opening period in between markers by Dion Phaneuf of the Rangers and Dany Heatley of the Bruins to stake the East to a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.  The East outshot the West 21-2 in the period, making it an easy one for winning goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Mike Richards of the host Hurricanes and Rick Nash of the Lightning also scored for the East.

Joe Thornton of the Hawks, Jay Boumeester from the Minnesota Wils and Evgeni Malkin from the Columbus Blue Jackets scored for the Western Conference, who trailed 5-0 before Thornton beat Pascal Leclaire of the Sabres at 2:11 of the second period, on their third shot of the game.

Kiprusoff was perfect in the opening period for the East, facing only a pair of shots.  Leclaire stopped his last 7 shots in the second period to finish 7 for 8, while Corey Crawford of the Bruins stopped 5 of 7 shots in the final period.  Craig Anderson, who suffered the defeat, faced a 21 shot barrage in the opening period for the West.  The Edmonton Oiler starter stopped 17 of the 21 shots.  Niklas Backstrom of the Anaheim Ducks and Marc-Andre Fleury of the St. Louis Blues each allowed just one goal in their period.

Edler was named the game MVP, scoring a pair of goals and adding an assist, while firing 6 shots and blocking 3 others.  Richard and Heatley each scored a goal and added two assists for the East, while Alex Ovechkin of the Toronto Maple leafs picked up 3 assists.

Patrick Sharp of the Phoenix Coyotes had a pair of assists for the West, the only skater with multiple points.

Final shots were 46-17 for the East, with East going 1 for 8 on the power play and the West going 0 for 1 with the man advantage.
