Winds of Change in Ohio Written by habsfan93 - November 12th, 2008

The Sad Blue JacketsThe Columbus Blue Jackets were a sorry bunch after losing their 3rd straight Stanley Cup Finals. After a day of sorrow, GM habsfan93 bounced back with a new plan for the club, which he quickly began executing.

Within days of trading reopening, the Jackets said goodbye to Coach Lindy Ruff, Corey Perry, Ales Hemsky, Brad Stuart, Brian Rolston, Phillipe Boucher, and CMHL superstar Joe Sakic. Rumours are also strongly indicating that Wade Redden will be leaving soon.

Coming to Ohio, though, are no slouches. Next year will see the debut of stars like Alex Frolov, Vinny Lecavalier, Francois Beauchemin, John-Michael Liles and Dimitri Kalinin.

Lecavalier joins the Blue Jackets Lecavalier arrived from Ottawa in a surprise deal with newly installed GM Brian Sawchuk. Sawchuk met with the Jackets GM to introduce himself and the two quickly found a trade connection. Lecavalier will be expected to step into Sakic's shoes and lead this team.

Alex Frolov will be taking Brian Rolston's spot on the 2nd line LW. GM habsfan93 was unable to come to terms with Rolston and decided to sign-and-trade him along with Boucher to the Sabres. Coming back is Brendan Shanahan, Beauchemin and Liles. The two dmen are expected to be cogs on the blue line next year. Shanahan, however, is expected to be moved as it is unlikely that Columbus can find the salary space to keep him.

Sakic indicated after the conclusion of the playoffs that he wanted to finish his career as a Blue Jacket. Unfortunately for him, the GM is not one to sit and wait on a retirement decision and risk getting no return, so he dealt Sakic to Vancouver for some much needed defence depth in Dimitri Kalinin and a good budding young player, Nick Foligno. Foligno will be expected to step in, in about 2 years time.

In other roster news, Brad Boyes will be coming back up from Modo and will be playing full-time RW on one of the first two scoring lines. Jussi Jokinen will be coming up to centre the 3rd line and if the Jackets can't keep Shanahan, Dave Bolland will be the Jackets lone rookie next year, manning the 3rd line RW. Christian Ehrhoff will finally get a shot to stick on the blueline this year as well.

With regards to Wade Redden, he is expecting to be moved in the next few days. Right now, two Western Conference teams have expressed a strong desire to add Wade, as much as habsfan93 would like to move Wade to the East.
