CMHL Free Agency is now open. Please see the forums Announcements board for details, or simply read the rest of this article. The list of UFAs and RFAs is now sortable and can be accessed from the GM Activity menu. Offers are to be made by using the web-based offer-maker accessible by clicking on the player's name in the UFA/RFA list.
Free Agency is now Officially Open!
This is a little complex, but please read through to make sure you understand, and post any questions you may have.
Depending on what kind of player you want to sign, the procedure to sign that player will be different. There are four types of player you can sign:
- Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA)
- Restricted Free Agent (RFA)
- Unassigned Player, 23 Years Old and Older
- Unassigned Player, Younger than 23 Years Old
The following webpage contains a sortable list of all UFAs and RFAs. You can make an offer to a player on these lists by clicking on their name. The link is also listed as the Free Agent List in the GM Activity menu on the website.

Unrestricted Free Agent:
These are players who are in the CMHL database and are not assigned to a team. Their ratings are set for the coming year. This list of players can be found on the website, at the link provided above (or in the GM Activity menu).
UFA offers will be processed twice a week, most likely on Mondays and Thursdays. Offers must be submitted by 10 PM EST on Sunday and Wednesday night in order to be processed. Results will then be posted at some point during the day Monday and Thursday.
To make a UFA offer, click that players name on the UFA list, and specify your team, the number of years and the annual salary in the appropriate boxes on the player's page.
Teams may make up to 3 offers per processing period. In other words, you can make up to 3 offers by Sunday night, see the results on Monday, and then make up to 3 more offers by Wednesday night, and so on. The 3 most recent offers for unique players that you submit will be considered. So if you make an offer to a player, and then change your mind and want to offer more, just resubmit your offer. All offers are timestamped upon receipt.
The offer that will be processed is the largest total monetary offer. In other words, 3 years at 5 million a year (15 million total) will be processed ahead of 2 years at 7 million a year (14 million total).
If two teams offer the same total contract amount, the team that finished lower in the standings in Season 4 will have their offer processed.
Restricted Free Agent
These are players whose rights are owned by a CMHL team and who have received a qualifying offer but who have not reached an agreement with their club.
RFA offers and offer sheets will be processed daily, starting on Monday. Offers submitted before 10 PM EST will be processed the next day.
Any team can make an offer to an RFA. However, if the team making the offer is not the team who holds his rights, that is said to be an offer sheet. The team that holds the players rights will have the option to match the offer, or not match the offer and receive compensation from the team making the offer if the offer is accepted. The compensation table can be found at the end of the rulebook. The team making the offer sheet has to be able to immediately provide the required compensation. The team does not have to use their own draft picks (i.e. they can use picks acquired from other teams), however, the team receiving the picks has the right to choose which picks he receives if there is more than one option (i.e. two 1sts from the same year to choose from).
-- Clubs owing one (1) draft selection must have it available in the next draft.
-- Clubs owing two (2) draft selections in different rounds must have them available in the next draft.
-- Clubs owing three (3) draft selections in different rounds must have them available in the next draft.
-- Clubs owing two (2) draft selections in the same round, must have them available in the next three (3) drafts.
-- Clubs owing three (3) draft selections in the same round must have them available in the next four (4) drafts, and so on.
When a Club owes two (2) or more draft selections in the same round, the signing Club does not elect the years in which such selections shall be awarded to the Prior Club; rather, the selections next available will be transferred to the Prior Club (i.e., a Club that owes two (2) selections has them available in the next two (2) drafts – that is when they are transferred).
If the offer sheet is not matched, but the player does not accept the offer sheet, the team who holds his rights continues to hold his rights and it is business as usual (as if the offer sheet never occurred).
Unassigned Player, 23 Years Old and Older
This applies to any player 23 or older, at the time of the signing, that is not in the CMHL database. In order to sign these players, an offer must be made using the tool on the UFA List webpage (see the link at the top of the page).
UFA rules apply to these players with regards to which offer is processed, when they are processed, etc.
Ratings for these players will be determined only after the player is signed!
Unassigned Player, Younger than 23 Years Old
This applies to any player younger than 23, at the time of the signing, that is not in the CMHL database. These players are signed to rookie contracts, on a first come, first serve basis by announcing the signing in the Team Activities forum.
