It sure didn't take long for Phil Kessel to acclimate himself to the Avalanche style of hockey scoring a goal on 4 shots and finishing the game with a plus 1 rating and just under 18 minutes of ice time against the Arizona Coyotes.
He was also featured on the second powerplay unit logging 3:36 with the man advantage and looked really good. "We brought Kessel in to score goals plain and simple", says GM Cooper. "He looks to be everything we expected we would get so far and hopefully he can keep this up and take us on a deep playoff run".
Other notable players were Chris Tanev who assisted on 2 of the 3 goals taking him to a season total of 14, and backup netminder Petr Mrazek who stopped 37 of 39 shots for the win. "Petr played really, really well out there tonight and we will be giving him another look when we host San Jose for the first of a home and home," said coach John Hynes.
Although the team seems to be giving Mrazek sheltered games, if he continues to impress he could see a bigger role down the road as the team will look to balance out the workload a bit more to avoid burning out Demko for a potential cup run. "It's hard to take a guy like Thatchy out when he's playing the way he is", joked Hynes, "but lets be real abouth things, the goal is not simply to make the playoffs, but rather to bring home the Stanley Cup, and we will manage our guys accordingly in order to try and acheive that goal."
