Montreal Maroons are new ICHF Affiliate Written by Brian McFarlane - August 9th, 2022

The results are in and the fans have spoken.  The Habs new affiliate will be called the Montreal Maroons.  As many of you may know the Maroons were a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL). They played in the NHL from 1924 to 1938, winning the Stanley Cup in 1926 and 1935. They were the last non-Original Six team to win the Stanley Cup until the expansion Philadelphia Flyers won in 1974.

It was announced earlier this year that the Montreal Canadiens would be relocating their farm team closer to home: from Hamilton, Ontario to play in Montreal.

Playing out of the same rink will provide the Canadiens with a readily accessible supply of players to pick from in case of injury, and also gives them the ability to keep a close eye on the development of prospects, something that was a bit more challenging when those players were at least a flight away.

The convenience of the new location and the co-promotion opportunities that it provides are a reminder of the last time the Habs were fortunate enough to have their ICHF affiliate so close to home.

GM Ron Jones stated that “we wanted our most loyal fans to have a say in the name of the new team.  So, it will truly be their team.”

The choices for the team' name were Maroons, Voyageurs and Wanderers.
