The Canadiens knew that this year was going to be long and tough on not only the fans, but the organization as well. You don’t trade many of your best players that used to be part of the core and expect to turn it around instantly. That being said, the team is probably worse than even they would have thought. In a dark year, we are going to bring a bit of sunshine and look at the top three players with Montreal this year and we’ll also include an honourable mention.

Patrik LAINE (1)
Laine was acquired last season in a trade with the Seattle Kraken. He had a bit of a slow start, with 15 points (9-6-15) in 45 games. However, this season Laine is on pace to eclipse 60 points for the first time in his CMHL career. Patrik was acquired to be part of the core moving forward and so far, it looks like he’s on target to be that. |

Robert HAGG (2)
Hagg was almost an afterthought in a pre-season trade with the Arizona Coyotes. That might be harsh, but he was only part of the trade to make the money work. So as much credit as the Hab’s GM would like to take for acquiring Hagg goes out the window. He’s been solid in all three zones and is on pace to have his best offensive season. He is a minus one this season, but very few players on this team aren’t. There are some in the organization to try and re-sign him when his contract runs out.

Kasperi KAPANEN (3)
Acquired as part of the Hagg trade, he is on pace for over 30 points which is fine, but where he’s excelled is defensively in his checking role. One of only four players on the Canadiens with a plus beside his name.

Moritz SEIDER (HM)
Homegrown defender playing in his rookie season and being thrown to the wolves and fighting it hard in his own end with a team worse -14. That being said, he’s been terrific offensively with 20 points (5-15-20). Seider started on the first pairing, but it was pretty obvious that he wasn’t ready defensively to take on the league’s best players. Moritz has looked more comfortable on a third pairing with veteran Jordie Benn.
