The gaze of the sports world will turn toward Seattle on Monday night, as the Kraken are set to open their new barn, Climate Pledge Arena.
The Seattle Kraken opened the 32nd CMHL Franchise with the expansion draft over the summer. Selecting 30 players from 30 CMHL Teams. GM Giddens went with a young, talented, and speedy group. He sprinkled in a few veterans with James Neal, Adam Henrique, Josh Bailey, Evegeny Dadonov, and Shea Weber. Learning the news of Shea Weber’s retirement after the draft, GM Giddens flipped Shea for a 3rd round pick in 2022. Overall, the Kraken come with a loaded young group with tons of potential. We should see them in the playoffs in a few years.
The strong hold, and the strength of the Kraken starts in the back. Selections of Chris Driedger, Alex Nedeljkovic, Jack Campbell, and Cal Petersen will be the strength of the Kraken franchise in year one. The Kraken then added Tyler Meyers in Free Agency to add a #1 D-man to their core.
Other additions in Free Agency came with a lot of questions around him due to injuries, but Vladimir Tarasenko signed with the Kraken and hopefully a franchise player for years to come. Tarasenko is proving a lot of franchises wrong in the NHL now.
The Kraken continued there coming to life in the CMHL with the 2021 Entry Draft in early August. Selecting #2 overall, William Eklund. Mr. Eklund has already shown his worth in the real NHL with the San Jose Sharks. Selecting at the eleventh overall pick the Kraken took Cole Sillinger. Another youngster already proving his talent in the real NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Kraken entry draft went fantastic, and GM Giddens is beyond happy with the talent pool in the expansion organization. Giddens was quoted as saying “We have a bright future.”
In further news this week the Kraken announced its first captain in the history of the 32nd franchise. James Neal was announced to lead the young team in the 2021 – 2022 season. Josh Bailey and Tyler Meyers will be assistant captains.
Giddens noted that his opening day line-up will not be released. He’s playing with a few lines before anything will be implemented. Lacking offensive power, Giddens is hoping for a few surprises on the team with the lackluster offensive ratings amongst the team.
GM Giddens said that opening night at Climate Pledge should be one for the ages. He’s hearing that there will be many Seattle superstars in the building watching with the loudest crowd in the CMHL.
