The Montreal Canadiens have continued on their rebuild since changing General Managers early in 2022. The team acquired Dustin Brown, Jordan Greenway (pictured), Jakub Lauko, CAR 1 2025 and prospect Mackie Samoskevich for Jaden Schwartz.
There were rumours that the team was looking to trade Schwartz by the trade deadline or risk losing him for nothing if he didn’t re-sign in the off season.

Jaden Schwartz is definitely the best player in the deal with the GM of the Carolina Hurricanes stating the team is going for it. While on the other side, there is little doubt that Montreal Canadiens organization is in full rebuild mode.
"We can tell you that sometime in the last week or so, Jaden Schwartz informed the Montreal Canadiens that he wanted to test free agency," commented Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dhali – The Team.
The team didn’t believe they were in the position to lose a star forward for nothing. There’s no doubt that the team needs to fill some holes and doesn’t have a lot coming in the system.
"We had approached Schwartz’s agent about whether he’d be willing to re-sign and we were told that Jaden was willing to comeback. We respect players right to test the market and see what they’re worth. That being said, when Carolina asked about him a deal came together very quickly. The Cane’s GM was a pleasure to deal with," stated GM Ron Jones.
As for how the newly acquired Canadiens will fit with the team. Dustin Brown is a veteran forward that is signed for this year and next and it’s expected that he’ll get a chance to play on one of the scoring lines. Gigantic winger Jordan Greenway is expected to find a spot in the bottom six once he returns from his three game suspension. While Jakub Lauko needs time to develop his game and he will get that opportunity in the minors. While Mackie Samoskevich will stay at the University of Michigan.
